A Sicilian grower's irrigation water contained only 6 ppm of oxygen, which dropped as low as 3 ppm at the drippers. The result, especially during the hot summers in southern Italy, was crop losses reaching up to 20%. For grower Andrea Ferrera, this was reason enough to invest in a nanobubble system.
Stoffels Tomaten has experienced some difficult years in recent years, including root problems and virus problems. In search of improvements, the water system was thoroughly overhauled. “We have actually done three things, of which the investment in nanobubble equipment is the most striking,” says Paul Stoffels.
Since pepper grower Arthur Mooijman has focused on resilience, his plants have remained more vital and are less affected by diseases and pathogens. Since the commissioning of a bioreactor that aerates and microbiologically enriches the irrigation water, these effects are even more noticeable. “Plants benefit more from oxygen-rich water with good micro-organisms than from sterile water,” he says with conviction. “I no longer have root diseases and my plants are clearly more vital and stronger.”
About six years ago, pepper grower Arthur Mooijman decided to invest in a plate aeration system due to algae problems in his water tank. Now that Mooijman has a greenhouse in Berkel en Rodenrijs since 2021, he has also started investing in this location. Since March of this year, an Oxybull system from Agrona has been operating here as well. Additionally, the grower also utilizes an ABR Bioreactor.
Life Sciences Review: Agrona belongs to the top 10 biotech horticultural companies. Traditional methods of cultivation in the horticultural sector are based on climate, but the focus is now also shifting to improving water quality. However, most water disinfection methods eliminate all bacteria and fungi, including those that are good for soil health.
On 13, 14 and 15 June 2023, Agrona and PB tec will be at the GreenTech fair in the RAI Amsterdam, at PB tec stand no: 01.102. The #1 horticultural technology platform in the Netherlands, where industry professionals from all over the world come together to connect, network, share knowledge and do business.
Agrona's OxyBull aeration system ensures an optimal oxygen concentration in the water and root environment. XL Bloom Youngplants in De Lier has been using the OxyBull since March. Powerful pump with a capacity of 60 m³/hour blows a lot of air into the water, causing a lot of movement in the water.
Agrona's OxyBull aeration system ensures an optimum oxygen concentration in strawberries' water and root environment. In the Netherlands, greenhouse strawberry company Dutch Berries has now installed a third system. The aeration system now boasts an oxygen sensor. It continuously measures the basin or silo water's oxygen content. It does so by linking to the climate computer.
Agrona's OxyBull aeration system provides crystal clear and healthy oxygen-rich water at VG Orchids in De Lier. The aeration system has been expanded with an oxygen sensor for continuous oxygen measurement in a basin or silo. By connecting to a climate computer, the grower can monitor the oxygen content.
The main majority of horticultural crops are on substrate. With that you can steer the fertilzer very well. Strangely enough, however, we do not make optimal use of this in horticulture. We systematically give an oversupply of water and fertilizers. Nobody knows exactly what the effect is. There are indications. Nitrogen, for example, mainly stimulates leaf and stem formation. A smaller supply would be good for flower formation and setting. But managing this requires that you can measure precisely the needs of the plant and the levels in the nutrient solution from day to day. And much more insight than we have now. Methods are gradually being developed to adjust the mineral supply more to the needs of the plant.
Agrona's OxyBull aeration system ensures optimum oxygen content in the water and root environment. XL Bloom Youngplants in De Lier has been using the device since March of this year. A strong pump with a capacity of 60 m3/hour blows a lot of air into the water, so there is plenty of movement.
It was long thought that bacteria had to be fought, but it is now clear that this idea is wrong. According to Nadir Laaguili of Agrona, it is not about fighting bacteria, but about finding the right balance. The company has developed a plug-and-play nursery for beneficial aerobic bacteria.
You do not replace a “tricky” pepper gutter that does not make it possible to drain from the side. In order to take steps with the oxygen content in the mat and thereby prevent root problems in the course of cultivation, Personal Vision chose to work with an aeration system. “An hour before the first watering, the Oxybull ensures that the oxygen level in the drain silo is back up to standard”, says cultivation specialist Roel Klapwijk of the company that grows red block peppers on 7 hectares in Bleiswijk.
Sufficient oxygen in the water and root environment is a prerequisite for a strong and vital crop. More oxygen makes the crop stronger and ensures higher production. That is the experience of Van der Voort Tomaten in Vierpolders. The company uses an Agrona water treatment system that permanently maintains optimal oxygen levels.
SeedCare in Oosterleek, North Holland, produces 40 different crops of seeds for national and international companies under 2 hectares of glass. The vegetable crops, such as cucumber and tomato, are grown in the ground. The potted plants are on permanent cultivation tables. The crops are watered as needed, so there is no drain or drainage water.
A high oxygen content in the water is of great importance for the development of plants. To realize an optimal oxygen supply, various vegetable companies in greenhouse horticulture use the OXYBULL aeration system. The system ensures that the concentration of oxygen in the water and root environment is optimal.
